My right to live, to choose, to be…

Our dear friends,

With the start of the New Year, we in Aswat want to share with you our achievements in the course of our sixth year and to also present our plans for 2008.

We started on our road as an independent project and today we are an organization and a movement that is leading both a story of success and the lesbian and gay struggle in all dimensions - nationally, regionally and internationally.

Part of our achievements in both community and organizational fields:

1. Opening and widening Empowerment and Support initiatives for the LGBTQIs community in different areas of the country, initiating empowerment and training courses and setting up a support and consultation line.

2. Programs that offer Service, Social Change and Community Building by creating social dialogue and cooperative work with many organizations and breaking the boundaries of silence.  Our first conference "Home and Exile in Queer Experience" that was held in March 2007 was a great success and we had 350 participants.

3. Programs in Advocacy, Outreach and Education through our publications, such as the first book of Aswat "Home and Exile in Queer Experience: Collection of Articles about Lesbian Homosexual Identity", also through various media stages and other educational programs such as the first Educational Seminar that we held together with AlQaws and Baladna for young activists.

We begin the year by joining the Haifa women's coalition beside to with "Kayan", "Women to Women", and the "Support Center" as their fourth formal partner.

And we have moved into our new offices!!

We are currently celebrating the publication of our second book "My Right to
Live, to Choose, to Be: A Collection of Literary Texts written by Arab Lesbian Women".
Dr. Samar Habib, a Palestinian researcher and writer, from the University of Western Sydney-Australia, is joining us to acknowledge this groundbreaking work by Aswat.

Our programs will also include a regional meeting with some of the Arab
LGBTQI groups from neighboring Arab countries to create coalitions, solidarity and collaborative initiatives.

Some of our programs for this year will be:
4. Empowerment and Support Initiative: social group meetings, support group meetings in the northern and central regions, empowerment courses, training courses, web forums and opening Aswat's new home to the LGBTQI community.
5. Service, Social Change and Community Building: expanding our library and information center, opening our online archive, enhancing our support line, strengthening the crisis fund, supplying free consultation services.
6. Advocacy, Outreach and Education: enhancing our workshops, integrating a new work team, expanding our networks; publishing educational materials and working to raise awareness and advocacy within the Palestinian community though media and publications.

Welcome to Aswat's new home and join our success,

Warm regards,

Members of Aswat at home and abroad, the staff and board of Aswat,

Rauda  &  Samira
General Coordinator    Board Coordinator
