Muslim Condemnation of Beheadings

The increase in "beheadings" by Islamic extremists is extremely disturbing. While many Muslim scholars have condemned "terrorism," many have expressed disappointment that 'fatwas' against this barbaric form of murder.

However, given the current anti-Muslim climate in the Western world, it is not surprising that one cannot find any statements condemning beheadings. A quick Google search however shows that indeed several prominent Muslim scholars, from varying Muslim ideologies, have condemned the practice of beheading.

* Council on American Islamic Relations' Board Chair Condemns Beheadings
* Muslims Condemn Nicholas Berg Beheading

While a Google search did not result in many 'fatwas' (or religious decrees), the so-called "battle of the fatwas" is raging across the Islamic world.

Khaled Abou El Fadl, writes about this phenomenon in his book,
Speaking in God's Name. He examines the historical Islamic methodology of fatwas and how it has changed and been corrupted over the centuries.

Other articles on the topic of "the battle of the fatwas" include:

So where does this leave the average Bilal and Fatima Muslim who are not properly "accredited" to issue a fatwa?

Each of us has a responsibility to speak out against injustice, no matter who the victim may be. As the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) eloquently stated once to his wife:

"Avoid Cruelty and injustice..and guard yourselves against miserliness, for this has ruined nations who lived before you." - (Riyadh-us-Salaheen, Hadith 203)

May the Divine guide us all to the path of peace and lead us away from injustice. Aamin
